Social Media & Me

How have social media platforms changed the way we consume and understand information?

Social media has changed the way we judge information. In more recent days, we are more dependent on other people’s perceptions rather than analyzing things through our own eyes. How many likes a post has or the amount of times it’s been shared influences our opinion on any hot topic. Also reading comments and viewing what the majority bias is may have an impact on your mindset.

What value do you get from online social interactions? How is social media and social capital helping to form youth culture?

  1. Through online social interactions, many people like to believe that they gain “social value”. Social value is more commonly known as popularity. Popularity is one of the main motives for increasing social interactions. This particular type of “value” seems to change the way others judge you based off looking at how many followers, likes, comments, etc. you have.
  2. Social media, although sometimes dangerous, can also often help form youth culture. This generation can easily gain access on other individuals which can give supportive insight. It can be a positive way to share certain aspects of your life with your friends a family as well.

Do you see any similarities between the world presented in this video and the world you live in? How does the main character gain and lose points? Why are these points important to her?  What value might be derived from this type of social interaction? How are social interactions changed in this world?

One similarity I particularly noticed was how people tend to agree with the majority even if they don’t agree with the majority’s bias.  Similar to gaining likes or follows in our world, the character gained, or lost points based on other people judging them. These points are important to the character because it is one of the main things people consider when interacting. Social interactions are now less based on the interaction itself but rather their value on social media.

Favourite Video

This is my favourite video. The sound of rain is something that I connect to because it reminds me to be aware of my surroundings. I feel very privileged to live in Vancouver and it often rains here which is why I really like this video.

Favourite Quote

Winnie-the-Pooh once said, “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.”. This quote is very concise yet complex which makes me have to analyze it more critically. This is my favourite quote because it reminds me to be grateful for all the privelages I have in my life.
