1) Are you surprised by any of the data? If so, what are the surprises. If not, why not?
I was in fact a little bit surprised that Cuba and Estonia were able to decrease the amount of carbon that they were emitting, another thing that I had observed that was a little surprising was the amount of carbon Yemen and Angola had increased in a span of 2 decades, which did surprise me a little, but at the same time not because countries develop and populate which most likely led to the change of carbon.
2) What do you think the prospects are for future generations?
If countries continue to produce more and more carbon at this rate then future generations may need to prepare themselves and adapt to global warming and climate change, which could affect the terrain of the earth, for example some plants may cease to exist if it gets to hot. Though the simple solution would be to have factories stop producing carbon as a way to lower the carbon emissions, but it is not that easy as it may seem, since many countries are still in their developing stages as a country and need factories to produce essential needs for the citizens. But a possible way to stop the mass amount of mass production, is to find a new source that doesn’t release these types of gases.
On December 10th, 2018 Port Moody secondary had their annual school bazaar. I was fortunate enough to partake in this opportunity as a person selling an item. Unfortunately we could not buy and re-sell any items nor were any food products allowed. This made us students think outside the box in order for us to come up with a profit and succeed in the bazaar.
Thus, my group came up with the idea to sell tempered glass screen protectors and give service of cleaning the customers screen as a bonus. I was working with a trusted fellow classmate who goes by the last name of Brandon, we decided to sell tempered glass screen protectors since most of our schools students own phones, usually I phones. The company that we came up with was given the name “TEXTRA” which was the words Tech and Extra combined, and our slogan “Textrodinary Products” was pretty similar to the name. We decided that we were going to sell high quality, tempered glass screen protectors, but we met a road block at that idea, since it was just buying and re-selling, so Brandon and I decided we would give them a survey of cleaning the screen (as mentioned above). We also decided to sell phone holders and styli, under the brand name of Textra. One thing that happened that was really important was the fact that we found out that there was another group of older kids, also selling screen protectors, which meant we had competition during the bazaar.
During the week of the bazaar we gained a lot of experience selling, and having competition. We learned that some people would be willing to buy the exact same product but the people working would put on the screen protectors on for them, which is literally saying that you would pay five extra dollars to put the screen protectors on. We did need to change our approach after seeing this and experiencing it, we decided we would keep the same price but also put the screen protector on as well, in order to take the customers at the other stand. After doing this change we managed to have a lot of people come to our stand because our products were cheaper. In the end we managed to get past these road blocks and come out successful by making a profit and selling most of our products. One thing that really surprised us was that we were selling more styli than our screen protectors, and since we thought that the screen protectors would be a big hit, we did not buy a large quantity of styli, which was unfortunate since we had many people buy them.
There are many things that I learned from the bazaar, especially two major things. The first one would be that people are lazy and would be willing to pay extra money for something to be done for them, I learned it buy watching and comparing our booth to the other competing group and seeing what the people who did buy the products want. The second thing that I learned from the bazaar was that you need to adapt and change your course of action as you go, I was able to learn this fact by realizing that we needed to change our service since we were not gaining customers and selling our products. These that things that I learned from the bazaar matter since these things occur in the real world of sales, with big companies, so if I would experience at a young age, then I can adapt to it easier in the future. I think that in the future, we should ask face to face what people want and how they want it to produce the best result we possibly can and to have a better boxing and showing of the products that were willing to sell to customers.
Overall the bazaar was fun, tiring but it did give us a good learning experience. Though we were a bit less motivated from the fact that we couldn’t keep the profit that we made from the bazaar, the kids who joined the course who did it mainly to gain a profit were most likely let down, since this was the first year that the students could not keep the profit that they made. But at the end of the day, I learned a lot, met new people, made enemies and friends, dealt with cranky customers and managed to come out successful.
The video that i chose is called “Match Point” by Jain Mali Joseph Films
This film is not only just about badminton, but it also shows how hard work can beat talent and how doing good things will lead to good things given too you. There are 3 things that really gave meaning, how the boy who was poor and couldn’t afford to play badminton and the kids who had money both had interest in badminton, but the kids who played took their opportunity to play, slowly lost interest and did not give it their all, but once the poor kid was given a chance to play he wanted to get better and always tried his best even though he was not good at the start. The second thing that really had an impact was when the coach defended the poor boy from the arrogant rich kid, and was scolded in the process. Although that had happened to coach still was willing to train the boy and provide funds for him to play. The last event that really had me touched was when the rich kid and the poor kid both grew up and were playing each other in the tournament and the poor boy purposely let the rich boy win in order to protect his coach from more abuse and taunts from the rich kids parents and friends, then the rich boy said that he was no longer playing and gave up his spot for the poor boy and the coach. This film was overall a very well directed film, with good screening and a good sense of story.
“There is no problem being weak, but staying weak is where there is a problem”
The quote I chose was one that my mom told me. She said, “that there was no problem in being weak, the problem is staying weak.” This speaks to me a lot since not all people are born gifted with talents, and most people are born normal, with no special attributes, nothing special. Some would work harder in order to not stay normal and develop passions and special talents. The people who do this become successful in their future. The people who remain normal and do nothing to change and develop will most likely not become successful when they grow up. This quote also works in with school. When we progress to a new grade, and our first report card is not to our standards, we can either change and get better or we stay in the same state we are in. The results are a vast difference. Overall this quote is one that sticks with me and most likely will stay with me for the rest of my life.
This picture that I happened to stumble upon a few years back really has an impact on me, since it shows our world in its current state many people want to follow others, and all want to go in the passage way of life that seems the easiest. These people taking the path on the left will most likely end up as common people and will have to work hard for money, and their happiness will be scarce, but the one person on the right are the people who become successful, will have happiness and will have an easier time in getting through life. These people, even though they may have an idea that seemed ridiculous, they stuck to their gut and decided to go that path anyway, will most likely become successful and enjoy life to the fullest. This picture shows our world today and has a big impact on my life.
