My Digital Footprint

  1. Digital Foot Print

How might your digital footprint effect you in the future? I must admit this is not a question I ask myself often, now this might be because I don’t post on social media. However, if I did, I hope it would be something that I chose to keep in mind. Social media is able to affect the different opportunity’s you have in life, two such examples are  job offers, and collage or university scholarships. Studies have shown that many jobs, collages and university’s look at your digital footprint before they consider hiring or accepting you. Its always important to keep your digital footprint in mind as its able to negatively effect your life. With this being said, you are also able to use digital platforms as a different way of showing your accomplishments, and qualifications.

2. Safety

Since social media is such a big thing, its important to stay safe while using it. There is many different ways of staying safe on the internet, one such is making sure not to put out personal info. What I mean by this is make sure not to put out things that could be used to identify you, where you live, or where you work and go to school. Another rule you might want to follow is the grandma rule. This one is fairly simple, the way it works is before you go to post something take a moment to stop, and think would you want your grandma to see this. You could also choose someone else, the point of this being for you to think if you really want it on the internet. One last way to be safe is having secure passwords to any social media accounts. Make sure you change your passwords at least once a year, and make sure they’re something that’s not easy to guess like 1234.

3. Digital Permanence

What is digital permanence? Digital permanence is the concept, or more so fact, that everything digital is permanent. This means that theoretically a century from now someone could go on to Instagram and see a post you made in 2016. This also means that anything you delete is still on the internet, in a way you can never fully delete something you post. This is yet another reason to think about what you post, and if its truly something you are comfortable sharing. Its always important to remember that something you post now, has the power to haunt you later in life.
