How might your digital footprint affect your personal brand and future opportunities? Why is it important to be aware of one’s digital footprint? Give at least 2 examples.
Some ways that your digital footprint can affect your future are if you wish to apply at a college or University/when applying for a job. Many recruiters for both a job and University’s look at the applicants digital footprint as part of the application process. If the recruiter finds something inappropriate, there’s a very high chance you will not be accepted. If you don’t watch what you’re liking on Instagram or posting on snap chat (even if you’re a kid) it can come back to haunt you and destroy important opportunities in your future.
Describe 3 strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe?
If you’re worried about specific social media apps like Instagram or Snap chat, there are some security changes you can make. On Instagram you can have a choice in making your account private, only you can chose who can follow you. If in the case someone posts something about you that you’re not comfortable with showing up on your profile, you can un-tag yourself and it will remove from your profile. On snap chat, there is an option on who is allowed to see your story and what you post on there. There is also the stereotype usually heard about snap chat that if you send someone a picture, in ten seconds it will be gone which is true and untrue. It’s true because yes maybe the receiver wont see it anymore but they can always screenshot without your consent. Its untrue because every picture you take on snap chat, no matter if you delete it, it will always be saved in the back of Snap chats history.
How would you explain the idea of “digital permanence” to anyone in your spheres of influence: other students, your family members, your teachers, etc.? Why should we care about this concept?
The idea of Digital Permanence is just that no matter what we post on the internet, it will be on the internet forever no matter what. So before posting anything personal or inappropriate on the internet, think about how it can affect your future.
