Carrom

General idea about the game:

The game Carrom is originated in India. The object of the game is to sink
all of your pieces, using the striker disk in any of the pockets before your
opponent. The game can be played with 2,3 or 4 people. Pieces you need: 9 black disks, 9 white disks, a striker disk, a queen disk.

How to arrange pieces on board:

When you’re placing the striker on the board to shoot the sticker has to touch both base lines. It can either cover the red circle COMPLETELY or not at all. The striker can’t touch the diagonal arrow line. When flicking your striker disk, only your hand may cross line but no other part of your body. Place the black and white Carrom disks in the center of the board with the red queen disk in the middle.

How Points work:

Queen- 50 points ( only valid if you knocked one of your own disks on your previous turn)

Black Carrom Disks: 10 points

White Carrom Disks: 20 points

How to play:

Play opposite of your opponent. Choose who goes first and break the middle. Your goal is to pocket all your disks by flicking them with your striker. The first person to pocket all their disks  and the queen in their correct pockets wins the game, but you can also continue to pocket your opponents disks to get more points. In the event of a foul, you lose your turn and your opponent goes.

Fouls:

  1. If any Carrom disks leave the board (ex. fly off or fall on the ground)
  2. If your striker ended up in any of the pockets.
  3. If a player pockets 2 or more of their opponents Carrom disks.
  4. If the queen is pocketed at the same time as your opponents piece.
  5. If a player pockets their final Carrom piece before the queen  is covered.
  6. If a player touches any piece other then the striker.

Reflection:

While playing the game Carrom, the core competency, Critical Thinking comes into play. Especially when aiming the striker to flick at a Carrom disk. One must angle themselves accordingly and accurately to be able to pocket a disk. You also use critical thinking to figure out your opponent’s next move/tactic. Overall it seems like a fun learning experience and I’d like to play it one day.

Core Competencies – Social Responsibility

Today we met Avery, the Pads dog of Port Moody Secodary. Mr. Connelly brought him into our math class. We learned a bit about Avery’s job. His job is to help out people that may be dealing with stress and just need something to brighten up their day. When I met Avery this morning I immediately felt so much happier. Avery helps me realize the amount of responsibility Pads dogs have for example, they always have to be calm, attentive and listen to their owner. Just like Pads dogs, we also have social responsibilities when it comes to school. One must take responsibility for our own actions, must respect the rules and codes of conduct, mustn’t disrupt a class when the teacher is teaching and many more.

Measurement Project

For this project we used a chocolate milk carton as our 3D object. We were able to measure the length, height and width of our object using a ruler in centimeters. After finding the surface area and volume of our object normally we decided to try it out using the method we chose. We ended getting the exact same results! Yay! Overall I feel like we followed the criteria clearly and were able to demonstrate our understanding of 3D objects VS 2D objects.

Parallel City Project

For this project, since it was a partner project, I felt like the most important thing was communication. Being able to take into account your partners ideas and your own and being able to come to a conclusion that satisfies everyone. I think that my partner and I were able to do that pretty well when coming up with the creativity part of this project. We did make a couple of mistakes like not naming 2 streets and not double checking all our angles. Next time i’ll be sure to re check the project after it’s finished to make sure i didn’t forget anything or make any mistakes. Overall I think we did an good job following the criteria of the project.

What type of creative piece did you create and why?

I created a Prezi for my Social Media and ME project because i feel like it’s really easy to create unique and cool presentations on.

Were you able to successfully add a new post to your edublog entitled Social Media and ME?

Yes i added the URL on add media and uploaded it on the edublog above. ^^

Did you convey your understanding of the volume and accuracy of information available through social media?

I think i was able to express my understanding by answering the questions proposed that are on the Prezi.

Digital Footfrint

How might your digital footprint affect your personal brand and future opportunities? Why is it important to be aware of one’s digital footprint? Give at least 2 examples.

Some ways that your digital footprint can affect your future are if you wish to apply at a college or University/when applying for a job. Many recruiters for both a job and University’s look at the applicants digital footprint as part of the application process. If the recruiter finds something inappropriate, there’s a very high chance you will not be accepted. If you don’t watch what you’re liking on Instagram or posting on snap chat (even if you’re a kid) it can come back to haunt you and destroy important opportunities in your future.

Describe 3 strategies that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe?

If you’re worried about specific social media apps like Instagram or Snap chat, there are some security changes you can make. On Instagram you can have a choice in making your account private, only you can chose who can follow you. If in the case someone posts something about you that you’re not comfortable with showing up on your profile, you can un-tag yourself and it will remove from your profile. On snap chat, there is an option on who is allowed to see your story and what you post on there. There is also the stereotype usually heard about snap chat that if you send someone a picture, in ten seconds it will be gone which is true and untrue. It’s true because yes maybe the receiver wont see it anymore but they can always screenshot without your consent. Its untrue because every picture you take on snap chat, no matter if you delete it, it will always be saved in the back of Snap chats history.

How would you explain the idea of “digital permanence” to anyone in your spheres of influence: other students, your family members, your teachers, etc.? Why should we care about this concept?

The idea of Digital Permanence is just that no matter what we post on the internet, it will be on the internet forever no matter what. So before posting anything personal or inappropriate on the internet, think about how it can affect your future.

I chose this video because I think it has a really meaningful message and I think it’s really great that celebrities and artists with a platform are spreading this message. I think not a lot of artists talk about the topic of bullying and mental health, but I really think they should because with the platform that they have, they can spread more awareness about issues as such that we have in this modern day world. I know this song touched a lot of people by letting them know they’re not alone and that whatever they’re going through, they can overcome with surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people.

Quote That Represents Me!

“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try” – Jack Canfield

I chose this quote because ever since I was little, I was always scared to try something new like for example, a sport. I was nervous that the other kids would be better then me or that I wouldn’t know what to do. When I was in grade 2, my mom wanted to put me in basket-ball but I didn’t want to go because I was scared I wasn’t good. After going to the first practice, I realized everyone was in the same position I was in. Eventually I made some friends and grew to realize, I love the sport. I played every year on a team for 7 years, and I am so grateful that I at least gave it a chance, even when i was scared to fail.

Pictures That Represent ME

I chose this picture to represent me because I am a very caring person, and I love helping out my friends, family and even the community whenever I can. I remember when I was a kid, I did summer camps in the community and I always looked up to the volunteers that would help us out, and now I volunteered for some summer camps to give the kids a really fun experience and I think it made me into a better leader.
