My Digital Footprint

  1. My After a very thorough search across multiple search engines, (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox) i struggled to find anything tracking to my digital footprint example. I searched very detailed information to find anything that leads to me but i could not do so. This is because i was introduced to technology at a very young age and got used to it quickly and i was taught to keep my information safe from random strangers on the internet. While searching for my digital footprint i also came to the realization that there are many people with my exact name so it would be very difficult for someone to find me under my name. If many of others have their social media accounts under the name Dylan Martin. When creating my social media accounts i also did not include my full name and i only followed / friended close friends that i knew personally and trusted. On my accounts i also do not post pictures or anything whatsoever if someone were to find it
  2. a) How might your digital footprint affect your personal brand and future (e.g,school and work opportunities? Give at least two examples.
If you were seeking to find a job in the near future and the manager that was hiring you decided to trace your digital footprint to see what kind of person you are it could ruin whether you get the job or not. So if you decided to link your full name and personal information about yourself on any social media platform they can easily find it with some research and if you posted things that are Racist, Homophobic or anything else that is derogatory they can choose to give you the job or not.If you are to build a brand in the near future (example) of giving to the homeless or donating to charities and you make people think you are a very kind and generous person if someone were to go and trace your digital footprint from your name and find posts from long ago that shows you do not care for those charities and are just doing it to make a living then people can react differently to what you do as a brand.

b) Why is it important to be aware of one’s digital footprint? give at least two examples. If you are a manager of a company in the future you will be able to see what type of person you are hiring you can see if they have done anything sketchy online to alter your final decision to hire them or not.

Overall by looking into someone’s digital footprint you can decipher whether or not you want to associate yourself with them example if they were being disrespectful to another person online but are nice in person.

2. Safety

a) Describe at least three strategies (e.g., consider passwords, cookies security, etc.) that you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe.
1. Don’t use your full name on social medias that anyone can see and if you decide to do so. Make sure you have all the settings matched to your preferred profile (Privating your account, only following people you know and trust.)

2. Dont use the same password for everything this is due to the fact if someone figured out your password someway they can access everything about you so to prevent this. Use complex passwords on every account you create and also make them different in many ways to have that feeling of security knowing no one will be able to access all of your accounts. (There are also very secure websites that have been created to keep track of your passwords and keep them safe for you if you are to forget them often)

3.  Don’t post information about yourself to the public. Even if you were to private your account people can still view some aspects of it (example,) They can still view your profile picture, bio about yourself and who is following you / who you are following. Then if they look through those tabs they can potentially find someone you trust and you follow and if that person they find doesn’t have a privated account they can potentially see pictures of you and that person even though you kept yourself private. On many social media platforms they have this feature to tag your friends in photos which is very simple they write your username with an @ symbol next to it and the person clicks on it and it travels them to your page. If you are to report these pictures social media can let you get them removed.

3. Digital Permanence

a) How would you explain the idea of “Digital permanence” to anyone in your spheres of influence?
If you were to post something that you soon later regret it will always be there, with the latest phones in one click of a button they can take a “screenshot” and have whatever you posted on their phone in their files forever. However if you deleted it instantly and no one took a screenshot the creators of the social media platform you posted this thing you regret it will be sent to their storage also known as the “Data Cloud” and they keep everything you post even if you delete it.

b) Why should we care and be aware of “Digital permanence?”

You should most definitely care what you post. If you post something wrong the creators of this social media are not going to go digging in their storage to find it and humiliate or expose you to your peers. But why would you post such a thing in the first place? You should always be aware of what your posting before you post it.
