DL fluency reflection: Information In this Math Project, I truly believed I have accessed, acquired, authenticated, organized and used information in a fluent manner. We used popular and recommended websites to access travel information and local websites such as London drugs are additionally used. This would ensure the credibility and legitimacy of our sources as the sources are heavily used and monitored. When researching pricing for flights, insurance, and car rentals, we inserted fake credit card information to surface taxes and hidden fees. This was especially true for vacation activities, such as a docking fee for sailing that was not advertised on the website. On a google doc, organized by Debi and Me, we put down all our information and made sure it followed our vacation schedule. All the information was calculated into our budget and realistically fit into the time between other activities, the hours the activities are available and their estimated duration. All this research and careful information sourcing do prove my fluency in information.

Core Competency Reflection: Developing Ideas My partner Debi was born in Mexico and grew up in the country in her earlier years. Visiting Debi’s home town as a tourist, and having her, a long-ago local become my tour guide would’ve been the most ideal idea.  Due to many absences from both me and her, our ideas and perspectives on the project were communicated poorly. Our absences made the researching hard as we would lack the knowledge of our local one day and lack the tourist perspective another day. We decided to switch to a more mainstream vacation location as many more all-inclusive activities and tourist activities were heavily advertised. This making our researching and planning much easier which helped us catch up on our absences and major family events. This change in idea to fit our situation demonstrates my fluency in developing ideas.

What is the role of a Travel Agent:   Travel agencies often offer better price points for the customer. This is because of vacation companies partner with travel agents. The exchange works with vacation companies can offer better deals and discounts in exchange for publicity by the travel agents. Traveling agents additionally can make your vacation planning much easier. Planning vacations can be extremely tedious and the person planning could forget to plan important but small activities. These can range from checking the country’s immunization requirements and checking the legitimacy of the vacation company they are working with. The travel agents have much more experience in planning vacations and they can add in many benefits into your vacation as they also know strategies to find legitimate and deals. Travel agents, in general, make your vacation planning experience much easier as they will book, research and your vacation.

My Digital Foot Print

Should I care about my digital footprint?

Your digital footprint is something to be given careful attention to. It holds power to our public profile and how we are portrayed. In job interviews, the hirers and interviewers will often google the name of the applicant. Articles posted about their criminal record is in the control of the media press. However, personal media illustrates how the applicant displays themselves as a person to their peers and to the world around them. It is a reflection of a person’s personality, interests, and hobbies. Online discussions posted, will reflect levels of maturity, worldviews and discussion styles (good or bad). This is why as an individual, your digital footprint should be respectful and professional to some degree, as it affects your chances in future jobs.

Your digital footprint could affect your business and career. Some corporate companies have stained their public reputation through inappropriate or questionable posts. Their posts are public displays of their brand, what consumers are supporting and what consumers associate with the brand. It is not exclusive to big corporate companies to have preyed on careless digital footprints. Small businesses, investors and popular Hollywood stars will all lose public interest and support if their digital footprint is to be tarnished.

What strategies should I use to keep my footprint safe?

Keeping our footprint safe can vary from having no duplicate passwords to keeping others safe in the online community. First, how should we keep ourselves safe and our digital footprint private?

According to a report from an article by Carly Okyle, three out of four Americans have duplicate passwords. Using a password in an unsafe, easily accessible program to hackers will leak your password to them. If you used the same password in a more secure program containing much more important information, the password keeping the information safe is ineffective as the same password has been hacked on a less secure network. To keep your passwords safe and effective, change them every five years, do not have duplicate passwords and have strong passwords. Password checkers are available such as this one. https://howsecureismypassword.net/

To keep your content safe and appropriate online for others, ask yourself the following questions. What’s it’s value? Does it fit your mission? Is the format the best? Is it posted at the right time? Most importantly, will you show this to your grandma?

What is Digital Permanence?

Digital permanence is the concept that anything that goes online, stays online forever. When a Facebook account is deactivated, you can reactivate it by logging in with the correct password and username. When a post is deleted, screenshots, downloads with mp3 and other strategies can still spread the deleted post online.  Snapchat also never deletes its self-deleting images and conversations. They are forever stored in their database. How can this impact us as students, family, and teachers?

13 and 14-year-old girls were murdered during a hike in Indiana, USA. A suspect was however found, thanks to the digital permanence of snap chat. Footage of them videotaping a man before their disappearance was self-deleted on snap chat. The video, in reality, was however saved in the snap chat database. Snap chat was able to cooperate with the police restore the video.

A negative of digital permanence links back to the impact our first question had, our public profile. When our judgment is impaired due to drugs, alcohol or strong emotions, we can make regretful online decisions. Even with deleted posts or conversations, you may be unexpectantly tagged in a questionable photo. The content also could screenshotted, saved and downloaded. Posts will also rarely self-delete and will stay online for years.

What should you take away from this?

Kevin Hart made homophobic posts online a whole decade ago (2009). Although the posts do not represent the person he has matured to be, the digital permanence of the post was found and has impacted his reputation. Decisions made online can hit you right back even ten years later. Think carefully before you post to create a safe environment for others and yourself. Change your passwords often, vary them and make them strong. In the end, respect the golden rule; treat people the way you want to be treated. What you post online can stay there forever.

Electric House Project

Project Questions

  1.  Due to all lights going off when you unscrew one light bulb, this proves the electrons only had one path follow. A series circuit is a type of circuit in which the flow of electrons takes place in one path. When you unscrew one light bulb, you have cut open the one path for electrons to flow, the circuit is no longer closed.
  2. The other two lights continuing to illuminate when one is unscrewed, proving the electrons have two paths to take, making the circuit parallel. A parallel circuit is typed of a circuit where the flow of electrons takes two or more paths. When you cut the connection to one path, the flow of electrons will be continued in the second path. The electrons that originally took in the cut path will now take the second path.
  3. The intensity of the series bulb will be greater than the parallel bulbs. This is due to the current being shared between two paths in the parallel. The current in the series circuit stays consistent as the current does not need to be shared. Although the parallel bulb’s combined intensity and current are the same as the series bulb, the parallel bulb individual intensity is less than the series.
  4. In question 3, a series circuit is split into two paths making it a parallel circuit, then the paths reconnect to create a parallel circuit within a series circuit. Unscrewing a light bulb in the parallel halts the connection to one of the split paths. So all flow will be diverted to the other single connected path. This means the flow is no longer split as all electron flow is now taking the one connected path. When electron flow takes one path, the circuit is now a series circuit making all intensities of the light bulb the same.
  5. In our project, we faced the challenge of being a small group. There was always something to work on in a group of two. We also could split the work easily and everyone had a chance to contribute. Such as during the start of the project, a person could paint and draw out cut lines, while the other designed circuits and planned the measurements of every cut. Everyone always had something to do and everything was punctually executed them.

When generating ideas, I feel creativity might’ve lacked. Planning was based solely on the criteria rather than reaching for our own ideas. My partner and I were so worried about meeting the due date we simply did not prioritize time to add creative elements to the project. I do feel that the house was quite expressive to our personalities.

We had a small diversity of personalities as we had a small group. This, however, meant we could create major elements based on our interests without other members feeling conflicting due to different interests. Our film room had the background of our favourite YouTubers and we had posters of memes such as the game dumb ways to die all over the house.

Our work ethic and our personal touches were our strongest points. I feel that the creative elements could be expanded and more prioritized in our next projects.
