Science Fair Reflection

  1. Our research question was “Which rotten fruits or vegetables would conduct the most electricity?” and the problem we were going to solve was to reduce the waste of food by turning it into an alternate energy source.
  2. This is an important topic to investigate as the world is being polluted a lot by the things that create our other energy sources. If we could use food that is not edible anymore and do something to it that could make it useful to use as an alternate energy source, that could help a lot.
  3. We had researched what fruits and vegetables could produce a reasonable amount energy when it is ripe and healthy as we predicted that they would be the ones that would still be able produce some energy when not so healthy. We also researched the different chemicals that make the fruits generate energy so that we would know not to do something to the fruit/veggies that would take away that chemical.
  4. We planned to have the rotten fruits and test if they conducted electricity or not. We planned to use copper wires and galvanized nails, an ammeter, a Light Emitting Diode, and fruits/veggies such as potatoes, citrus fruits, and tomatoes. We had not been able to collaborate much over the break so the procedure is not yet refined. Though we did have a rough procedure, going as follows: have different rotten fruits and veggies roughly the same size, three (minimum) of each fruit. Then, we would make a circuit and use the same one all the time. One by one, test each fruit and record the results using the ammeter.
  5. We did not connect with an adult or experts to help with our experiment.

IB 9 Science Quote

“Science is a way of thinking, much more than it is a body of knowledge.”

Carl Sagan (astronomer, 1934-1996)

I picked this quote because I agree with. Many people see science as just a body of knowledge, a bunch of facts and information, but I believe that science is much more than just that. Science is a way of thinking that we can apply into our lives, a process, a cycle of steps that we can follow to achieve knowledge or a doorway to discovering something new. Yes, science has lots of information and is a body of knowledge now, but what about before? Before we had all of this already discovered knowledge, science was and is used to gather knowledge, to critically or creatively think to attain the information we have now. A real life example would be the Scientific Process. The Scientific Process is a guide for us to think in a cycle, to observe, make a hypothesis, test and collect data, analyze the data, see if our hypothesis was correct, and then to go back to the start again.
