Your drawings of horses look like sausages? – Take Pre-Diploma 9 and learn to draw. Want to take better pictures? – try Photo 9. Need a break in your day?- relax and create in sculpture 10 and/or Arts Education 9. Interested in movie magic? -try Film.

Whether you are new or experienced in Art, PMSS art courses help you express your-self through art: technique, ideas and composition. If students are thinking about taking Design/Art or observational science courses later, taking at least one introductory visual arts course now is recommended.

Both IB and non-IB students may take any of these courses as a first step towards portfolios and the art world, and as an enjoyable elective for those looking for an artistic outlet. Choose one or more of the following grade 9 friendly courses.

Arts Education 9 – MAE–09

This is a basic beginner class. Enjoy learning many media and methods as you sample different art types.  Do a series of mini-drawings, mix media and paintings. Also explore sculptural which could include paper mache’, clay, wire, assemblage possibilities.  We investigate art of different cultures and artists while also learning to play and express in a series of small pieces.

 

Pre-Diploma Art Studio 9 – MVA-09IB

This is for both beginners and those with an art background. Enjoy learning to draw or learn to draw better, as you develop artistic skills focusing first on drawing. Then an exciting exploration of stone or other sculpture, painting/colour, graphic novel or print making units. Although this course is important for students considering the IB Art program in Grades 11 & 12, it is open to all [Do a lot and learn a lot – no IB fee if not-IB]. We investigate art of different cultures and artists while focusing on pursuing excellence in techniques (largely drawing…), as students develop personal imagery. No pre-requirements.

Studio Arts 3D 10: Sculpture – MVAC-10

This is a beginner class, a fun introductory Art course perfect for grade 9’s and 10’s, to learn how to think and build in 3-D; focusing on Mother Nature’s ultimate building material – clay! Various clay works such as pinch pots, gargoyles or dragons, slab and more will be explored. Students will learn to finish their work using under-glaze, glaze, stain, acrylic techniques. Other sculptural materials such as metal-wire, brick and stone carving, plaster and mold-making process such as casting, and paper, may also be chosen for each year. Artists of different cultures will be discussed, as students develop personal imagery, while creating functional and non-functional sculpture. Grade 9 students also earn Sculpture 10 (grad) credit. No pre-requirements.

 

Photography 9 – XPHOT09

This hands-on art course is designed to introduce students to photography, with a focus on digital photography. Through investigating a variety of photographic topics, such as product, people, photojournalism, nature, commercial, and experimental photography, students will gain a better understanding of composition, design and basics in post-production. Students will enhance their works using Photoshop, and Lightroom. DSLR cameras are supplied by the school or students can bring their own.

ADST – Media Arts 9: Film – MADMA09

Imagine yourself at the Oscars holding the “Best Director” award? Or are you just curious about what it takes to make a living in TV and film? Take Film 9! This course teaches the basics of filmmaking, providing grounding in directing, composition, camera control, and editing. This course will draw upon both technical and creative skills and will challenge all students from those who are new to film production to those who have previous experience. The second half of the course will focus on Animation. Introduction to the 2D digital world of art and animation. Students will learn to use Adobe Animate (formerly Flash) for their animated films. No pre-requirements.
