SOAR 11 – YCPA-1AT

Students will help to plan events designed to orient and connect grade 9 students to the high school setting. Further responsibilities include planning and implementation of SOAR lessons and the year- end celebration. Participation in this course is by teacher recommendation. Please pick up an application form from the main office or Room 3003 and hand into Mrs. Tsui.

SOAR 12 – YCPA-2AT

This course requires students to demonstrate extensive leadership experience in planning school events such as grade 8 tours, grade 9 orientation, and year end celebrations. Leadership 12 students are expected to guide less experienced leaders through SOAR lesson planning and implementation as well as communicate SOAR related goals with staff. Students must have completed SOAR 11 to apply for SOAR 12. Participation in this course is by teacher recommendation. Please pick up an application form from the main office or Room 3003 and hand into Mrs. Tsui.

Athletic Leadership 11 – YIPS-1A

Since space is limited in this course, acceptance is dependent on teacher recommendation and successful interview with the teacher. Students develop leadership skills by organizing school and community sports and recreational programs. As students participate in class initiatives, they gain and understanding of the skills and attributes needed for careers related to fitness and recreation. This course is open to grade 10, 11 and 12 students.

Athletic Leadership 12 – YIPS-2C

This course is offered to students who have been exceptionally successful in Leadership 11. Participation in the course is dependent on teacher recommendation. Students apply leadership skills and the knowledge they gain through class initiatives as they organize school and community recreational programs. They reflect and expand on personal leadership skills through peer-teaching experiences with mentors.This course is open to grade 11 and 12 students.

This course offers students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and practice theories through a variety of in-school and out-of-school experiences such as spirit weeks and grade specific events. Through consultation and collaboration with other “leadership” groups in the school such as Student Council, Athletic Leadership and SOAR, you will learn the skills of effective leaders. This course is intended to be student driven. The direction of the course and the productivity of the group are dependent on each member’s participation and input. The success of the course and our year as leaders at Port Moody is dependent on what you as an individual and you, as a group, are willing to invest. Assessment is derived from student’s participation and completion of leadership assignments. Students will be a part of organizing, planning and participating in school events. The leadership class will help school counselors, administration with school-based events such as parent nights, fundraisers etc. This class is an ideal fit for students who are passionate about building leadership skills through enhancing school community and cultivating school spirit. It is an expectation of this course that students will participate in 12 hours of volunteer time outside of normal instructional time organizing and running different events.

This is a full-year linear course that runs outside of the school day and will meet after block 5.
