The following courses are meant for students who speak a language other than English at home, and who are developing English fluency. Students will be required to access additional services as outlined by the EAL teacher. Students will be placed in the course that reflects their language level. 

ELL 1: Beginner ELL– XLDCA10EAL

This support is designed to help students who are new to Canada (and/or the English language) in improving basic English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Also included is an introduction to Canada and Canadian culture. Students will focus on sentence structure and beginner oral communication. Students successfully completing EAL Beginner are placed in English Language Development. 

 

ELL 2: English Language Development 10 – YESFL0A

The course is designed to continue to develop ELL students grasp of the four main English language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The course focuses on developing the strategies needed to read, write and extract information successfully in English, and addresses specific needs of students regarding language and culture. Throughout the course, students will participate in authentic situations. Students will demonstrate growth in English language proficiency through oral, visual, and simple written forms. Students will identify and compare their own customs to Canadian culture and customs. 

 

ELL 3: Introduction To Academic Language 10 – YESFL0B

Through Introduction to Academic Language 10, students will develop the academic language and extend the English language skills needed to be more successful in the content areas of English and Socials. The course will build students’ writing, speaking, listening, and reading competencies by introducing them to a variety of text genres, registers, structures, forms, and styles. Students will listen, read, and study texts in specific genres by studying the forms, styles, and models required to create these text structures to build their competencies so they can create original pieces. Included in this course are the elements that make up Canadian Culture, which include cultural identity and First Peoples culture.  

 

ELL 4: Academic Strategies For Language Learners 10 – YESFL0C

This course is designed to familiarize and extend a student’s abilities to use various strategies independently to meet the Learning Standards and Big Ideas, while concurrently being successful in content-based courses such as Social Studies and Science. Emphasis will be on the comprehension of important concepts, linking current information to prior knowledge and the application of strategies and skills learned. Students will become familiar with a variety of learning skills and Canadian assessment techniques. As well, through discussion and debate, students will learn aspects of the history and culture of Canada. Students will continue their study of genres and exploration of the Big Six. 

 

ELL 5: English Language Development 11 – YESFL1B

The course is designed to extend the exploration of ELL students into the four main English language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will be able to interact with greater confidence in familiar situations and able to apply their growing range of strategies. It will help prepare students for senior level academic courses and the language structures that they will be working with in those contexts.
