The aim of Physical Education is to provide opportunities for all students to develop knowledge, movement skills, and positive attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Physical & Health Education 10 – MPHED10

This course builds on the goals of the PE 9 courses. Students will develop, refine and apply movement skills in a variety of activities and environments. They will learn to identify and apply strategies to pursue healthy-living goals, reflect on the outcomes and assess their strategies used. Students will also analyze health-related decisions related to healthy eating, substance use, and sexual health. Students will set personal healthy-living goals, plan how to achieve them, and re-evaluate them in an ongoing basis. The primary goal of the course is to promote physical, social and emotional health while creating an active lifestyle.

Active Living 11 – MACLV11

This elective course will be offered in a co-educational setting with the main goal that students continue their exploration of team and lifetime activities. The aim will be to provide students with opportunities to participate in recreation and leisure pursuits, as well as continue their participation in team and individual sports. As many new activities as possible will be incorporated into the course. Students will also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and plan and implement personal health and fitness goals.

Active Living 12 MACLV12

This course offers students the opportunity to further their expertise in the activities offered in Active Living 11. Emphasis is on the development of skills and positive attitudes in recreational activities and life time skills. Students will also receive instruction and will gain practical experience in leadership roles within the school. This course would be an asset to students interested in a career in recreation or Physical Education but would also be of interest to students who like a variety of activities and are interested in personal fitness.

This comprehensive boxing training course is designed to provide participants with a well-rounded understanding of the sport of boxing. It covers essential techniques, nutrition, and mental health aspects to help individuals become proficient boxers while maintaining their physical and mental well-being.

Course Objectives:  Develop fundamental boxing skills and techniques.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of nutrition and its role in boxing performance.

Enhance mental health, resilience, and focus for both training and competition.

Fitness and Conditioning 11: Strength Training – MFTCD11

This course emphasizes strength training, balance, flexibility, agility,anaerobic and aerobic capacity, injury prevention and improving performance. Students will be using seven training components (Movement Prep, Rehabilitation, Physioball, Strength, Elasticity, Energy System Development and Regeneration) that will form the basis of their daily workout routines. In addition, students will learn positive attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle and how to put these health habits into their daily routines. Written components will include students designing, charting, and evaluating their own workout programs as well as completing a reflection paper at the end of the course.

Fitness and Conditioning 12: Strength TrainingMFTCD12

Fitness 12 is a continuation of the Fitness 11—Strength and Conditioning course. There is still a strong emphasis on strength training, balance, flexibility, agility, anaerobic and aerobic capacity, injury prevention and improving performance. Students will also continue to use the seven training components (Movement Prep, Rehab, Physioball,Strength, Elasticity, Energy System Development and Regeneration) to form the basis of their daily workout routines. The Fitness and Conditioning 11/12: Total Athlete course is designed for athletes who want to increase their understanding of sport-specific movements in order to improve their approach to fitness and training. Students will focus on fundamental fitness principles such as speed, agility, power, range of motion, and energy systems through various training methods. Training methods include plyometrics, calisthenics, vertical training, interval training, etc.  This course will also introduce athletes to other important facets of training like visualization, relaxation, recovery, and injury prevention. The Total Athlete course will put special emphasis on students understanding the elements of an athletic training program and being able to design and implement a program specific to their sport of choice.

Athletic Leadership 11 – YIPS-1A

Students develop leadership skills by organizing school and community sports and recreational programs. As students participate in class initiatives, they gain and understanding of the skills and attributes needed for careers related to fitness and recreation. This course is open to grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Since space is limited in this course, acceptance is dependent on teacher recommendation and successful interview with the teacher.

Athletic Leadership 12 – YIPS-2C

This course is offered to students who have been exceptionally successful in Leadership 11. Participation in the course is dependent on teacher recommendation. Students apply leadership skills and the knowledge they gain through class initiatives as they organize school and community recreational programs. They reflect and expand on personal leadership skills through peer-teaching experiences with mentors.This course is open to grade 11 and 12 students.
