MUSIC

The Music Department at Port Moody Secondary School offers a wide variety of traditional and modern innovative courses and is one of the most comprehensive programs in the province. Traditional courses are offered in Guitar, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Drumline, and String Orchestra. Modern innovative courses are offered in Digital Audio Production / Composition, Vocal Technique, and Rock School.

Students who choose Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra, and/or Concert Choir are allowed to take more than 8 courses – not as an alternate choice but as a regular preferred course. If you have any questions, contact the music department.

Instrumental Music: Concert Band 10 – MMUCB10

This course is open to all students who are interested in developing their musical skills in a large ensemble.  Instrumental technique, music theory, and rehearsal of Classical, Pop, Contemporary, and Movie Soundtrack genres are areas of concentration.

This large ensemble performs at school concerts and community events, explores a wide variety of concert repertoire and will be introduced to rudimentary marching skills. This group rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and is open to all musicians who play or are willing to learn woodwind, brass and/or percussion instruments.

Drumline ensemble rehearses concurrently with the Senior Concert Band and with the PMSS competitive Indoor Marching Drumline Program off-timetable 2 days a week. Students will learn a wide variety of repertoire available within the drumline tradition and work on intermediate marching skills. Students will have the opportunity to arrange and choreograph a final show and compete with drumlines from across the province.

This course is designed for students who wish to explore and perform music in the modern styles of jazz. This course is open to all students Musical experience is an asset but new music students are also welcome. Jazz Bands rehearse off time table during lunch, before and after school.

Do you want to play violin, viola, cello or double bass in an orchestra? If so, this course is for you. Musical experience is an asset but new music students are also welcome. From classical works of Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart to movie soundtracks and contemporary works, there’s a wide variety of repertoire and opportunity to learn in ensemble. This (credit) course will be offered Tuesdays from 3:25-5:25 and Thursdays from 3:25-4:25.

Do you love to sing? Concert Choir is open to all students. Musical experience is an asset, but new music students are also welcome. Students practice and perform Classical, Pop, Folk, Contemporary, Soundtrack and other styles, as well as learning to sight-sing and develop good singing tone and techniques. Concert Choir is a performance ensemble that rehearses outside the timetable at times TBA.

Guitar class is open to all students. This course introduces contemporary guitar techniques, how to read TAB, various picking techniques, chords and chord progressions. A wide variety of playing styles and repertoire will be introduced. This course is designed for students with no previous guitar experience as well as experienced guitar players. Musical experience is an asset but new music students are also welcome.

Rock School is an amazing opportunity to apply your musical skills in a modern musical setting. This course covers music and lyric composition and recording; musical, performance and rehearsal technique; professional behaviours; how to learn songs by ear and through music theory, and much more. This includes how to perform in and organize concerts and how to run sound for live music events. Musical experience is an asset but new music students are also welcome.

 

DRAMA AND THEATRE

Theatre Company 11: Acting – MDRTC11
Theatre Company 12: Acting – MDRTC12

In Theatre Company 11 and 12 students will learn about the nature of a theatre company and the interconnected roles and responsibilities of people who work within it. They will examine the requirements for teamwork, leadership, commitment, onstage and backstage, and front-of house etiquette. Students will work together in companies to create dramatic pieces in all different varieties of theatre. Students interested in any aspect of theatre (lights, sound, backstage, acting, stage management) should take this class.

Directing and Script Development 12 – MDRDS12

Students enrolled in this class will learn about creating a script for the theatre from just an idea. Once finished, the script will then be rehearsed with the Acting 11 and 12 class and these scriptwriters will become directors for the final product. Working with students interested in technology and stage design, Directors will help create an aesthetic vision and share the vision with an audience through the use of costuming, lights, set design, and sound.

In this course, students, who are interested in all aspects of Musical Theatre (Set Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Stage Managing, Sound Design, and Acting) come together to rehearse and put on a Broadway style musical. No experience is required, and everyone is invited. Roles within the show will be auditioned for within class, and each student will have an opportunity to partake in the show in their chosen capacity (not everyone has to sing, dance, act – tech or crew members are needed as well). The class will culminate with a performance of the musical to an audience of peers, parents, teachers, and outside audience. Musical Theatre classes take place after school, outside the normal timetable.
