MUSIC

The Music Department at Port Moody Secondary School offers a wide variety of traditional and modern innovative courses and is one of the most comprehensive programs in the province. Traditional courses are offered in  Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, and String Orchestra. Modern innovative courses are offered in Guitar and Rock School.

Instrumental Music: Concert Band 9 – XBA–09

This course is open to all students who are interested in developing their musical skills in a large ensemble. Musical experience is an asset, but new music students are also welcome and is open to students who play, or would be willing to learn, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet (Standard, Alto and Bass), Saxophone (Alto, Tenor, Bari), French Horn, Trumpet/Cornet, Trombone, Euphonium/Baritone, Tuba, Bass, or Percussion. Instrumental technique, music theory, and rehearsal of Classical, Pop, Contemporary, and Movie Soundtrack genres are areas of concentration.

Instrumental Music: String Orchestra 9 –  XBA–09OS

Do you want to play violin, viola, cello or double bass in an orchestra? If so, this course is for you. Musical experience is an asset, but new music students are also welcome. From classical works of Vivaldi, Bach and Mozart to movie soundtracks and contemporary works, there’s a wide variety of repertoire and opportunity to learn in ensemble. This course will be offered Tuesdays from 3:25-5:25 pm and Thursdays from 3:25— 4:25.

Instrumental Music: Jazz Band 9 – XBA–09JB

This course is designed for students who wish to explore and perform music in the modern styles of Jazz in a big band context and is open to students who play, or would be willing to learn Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Piano, Bass, Guitar, and Drums. Musical experience is strongly recommended, and we strongly recommend concurrent enrollment in the Concert Band given the higher demands of the repertoire in Jazz Band. Jazz Band is a performance ensemble that rehearses outside standard timetable and can be considered an extra elective that will not reduce your elective choices.

Choral Music: Concert Choir 9 – XC—09

Do you love to sing? Concert Choir is open to all students. Musical experience is an asset, but new music students are also welcome. Students practice and perform Classical, Pop, Folk, Contemporary, Soundtrack and other styles, as well as learning to sight-sing and develop good singing tone and techniques. 

Instrumental Music: Guitar 9 – XGUIT09

This course offers instruction in all aspects of learning to play the guitar, how to read TAB, various picking techniques, chords and chord progressions. A wide variety of playing styles and repertoire will be introduced. This course is designed for students with no previous guitar experience as well as experienced guitar players.

Contemporary Music 10: Rock School – MMUCM10

Rock School is an amazing opportunity to apply your musical skills in a modern musical setting. This course covers music and lyric composition and recording; musical, performance and rehearsal technique; professional practices; how to learn songs by ear and through music theory, and much more. This includes how to perform in and organize concerts and how to run sound for live music events. Musical experience is an asset but new music students are also welcome.

DRAMA

Drama 9 – MDR–09

In this introduction to acting course, you will experience a survey of an array of dramatic forms. From theatre games, to mime, to improvisation, to working with small scenes, to developing and contributing to an end of semester production, you will get an extensive overview of all things dramatic arts. This class will improve confidence speaking in front of others, improve your ability to collaborate, decrease anxiety in formal presentations, and will aid in communication skills. These acquired skills from Acting 9 are not just valuable in the presentation of dramatic arts but are transferable to all other classes and social engagements.
